July 15 – Update

Plans for Health & Safety Inspections

The Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee (JOHSC) has begun their inspections of labs at North Campus and Carrier Drive. The inspections are conducted by a team with faculty union, support staff union, and management present. If any deficiencies are found, the Supervisor of the area will be informed and expected to resolve the issue within 2 weeks. In emergency cases, Facilities will be contacted immediately. In addition to the regular inspection protocol, the JOHSC is also checking to ensure sufficient signage, barriers, physical distancing requirements, etc. are in place, as per Return to Campus plans. Over the next few months, the JOHSC will ensure all areas of Humber campuses/facilities are inspected, as per scheduled.

Ventilation of Work Spaces

The Union asked whether any plans for improvements to the current ventilation system are being considered, due to COVID-19. At this point, the College has no plans to change the ventilation system at any Humber campus/facility, or increasing external air for internal buildings. This decision is in line with public health guidelines, following the belief that the virus is transmitted via droplets and is not aerosol.

Refusals to wear mask in public spaces

The Union asked how the College would handle cases where individuals on campus refuse to wear a mask in public spaces. Individuals in private spaces (such as private offices) may take off their masks. Also, those who cannot wear a mask for medical reasons will not be required to do so. The College responded that all individuals coming onto campus must sign an Attestation Form, where individuals agree to abide by mask-wearing regulations. (This Attestation Form will be sent out to everyone later this summer.) If someone refuses to wear a mask where it is required, the person will be asked to leave campus. Next week, Public Safety will provide us with more details on this issue.
