No More Faculty Cuts!

On March 24th, 2026, the President’s Office announced that Humber would be proceeding with faculty layoffs despite strong domestic enrollment, additional funding from the Government of Ontario, and many years of budget surpluses. Like you, we are disappointed and angry to see that the college is going ahead with involuntary employee reductions that will greatly harm the quality of education offered by our institution.

Our faculty members are committed to building a learning environment that enables students to meet learning outcomes, succeed in the workforce, and achieve social mobility. Additionally, faculty members shape and refresh curriculum, foster innovation, and help build industry partnerships. Overcrowded classrooms, outdated curricula, and fewer student supports threaten to undermine student academic success and workforce readiness in the event of faculty layoffs.

Humber cites “Unparalleled Student Experience” as a core building block. Furthermore, Humber’s Productivity Now vision aims to deliver innovative, industry-relevant education and training in order to rebuild Canada’s economic advantage. By cutting faculty, the college is failing to honour these commitments to the Humber community.

We call on Humber leadership to invest in faculty, prioritize student learning conditions, and uphold the mission statement they purport to follow.

Humber Polytechnic has provided accessible, quality public education to communities since 1967. Humber prepares students for the workforce and thereby plays an essential role in building Ontario’s economy.

On March 24th, 2026, an email from the President’s Office to the Humber Community announced that involuntary layoffs would proceed imminently. Reducing staffing levels will seriously jeopardize Humber’s ability to provide job-related, on-the-ground training and therefore negatively impact Humber’s hard-earned reputation. Cutting faculty in this critical moment is not only short-sighted, but will entail long-term damage to institutional prestige, employee morale, industry relationships, and academic achievement.

Fewer faculty means larger classes, program closures, less individual student support, stagnating curricula and no innovation. It would lead to an impoverished learning environment in which students struggle to meet learning outcomes and graduate without work preparedness. In other words, faculty layoffs means lower graduation rates, declining enrollment, and weaker retention.

Given Humber’s strong domestic recruitment and the coming changes to post-secondary funding, now is the time to invest in faculty to strengthen Humber’s ability to educate, innovate, and build industry partnerships. There is still time to reverse course and commit to a future where Humber:

- Invests in faculty to promote continuous innovation, curriculum development, and industry collaboration;
- Prioritizes students by ensuring lower class sizes, increased face-time with faculty, and adequate student services;
- Recognizes faculty working conditions as students’ learning conditions.

Students deserve a learning environment that delivers educational excellence and prepares them to build a better Ontario. We all have a role to play in this mission – and I’m asking you to do yours.
